While a trip to Latvia offers the chance to indulge in therapeutic mud baths or peloid therapy, you don’t have to travel to experience the benefits of this natural resource. Several producers pack it into indulgent products for your bathroom cabinet, and you can get these delivered to your doorstep. So how does this mineral-rich mud — the organic sediment formed from decomposed flowers, herbs, and grasses over thousands of years and found in Latvia’s moorlands — become a skincare and haircare staple and what can it really do for your body?

Mud of this variety contains amino acids, lipids, enzymes, and vitamins to support one’s health and beauty. Depending on how it’s used, mud has cleansing, regenerative, energizing, soothing, and other beneficial properties.

“The greatest advantage of the mud is its ability to cleanse, remineralize, and regenerate the skin all at the same time. Mud skincare products help to cleanse pores, improve skin texture, reduce inflammation, and stimulate microcirculation. Of no less importance is the emotional aspect. Using them creates a sense of ritual, transforming your daily skincare routine into a home-based spa experience,” explains Mairita Čuda, founder of Kemern, one of the brands embracing this natural treasure.

Kemern sources its mud and sulphurous mineral water from Ķemeri National Park, where several facilities offer treatments such as mud baths. The company processes the mud to extract the minerals, humic substances, fulvic acid, and other bioactive compounds.

This process is key because “the extraction is what allows us to combine nature’s powers with modern cosmetic technologies to create products that are both effective and pleasant to use,” explains Čuda. She adds that “our task is to maintain the authenticity of nature, while creating formulations that meet contemporary standards of quality, efficiency, and aesthetics.”

Čuda believes that Kemern’s strength lies precisely in this ability to balance authenticity with the modern zeitgeist. She is confident that, with the right amount of ambition, quality, and a clear vision, Latvia is absolutely capable of producing world class products.

Based on her experience, Čuda shares that to be an entrepreneur in Latvia requires endurance, flexibility, and perseverance. “You must be able to stay focused in the long term, be comfortable with uncertainty, and be ready to grow with your business at all times,” she says.

Another company transforming this natural resource into beauty products is Marence, which sources green mud or limus from a lake in Rāzna National Park. It underscores that the pH level of freshwater mud is very similar to the pH level of our skin and offers products such as face lifting serum, hair fluid for split ends, and after-shave balm.

BDK Laboratory is another name in this space, using mud sourced from Baldone, a former resort town once known for its healing mud and mineral water treatments. Today, that same resource finds its way into products like toothpaste, micellar water, and conditioner. What’s more, the historical sanatorium in Baldone is slated for revival!

Mineral mud beauty products prove that valuable natural resources aren’t always the obvious ones like oil and timber, and Latvians are excellent at identifying this hidden potential. Find out what other ingredients Latvian entrepreneurs use to produce natural cosmetics!
