Winter in Latvia is a distinctive season shaped by nature, tradition, and a slower rhythm of life. Latvian winter typically lasts from November to March, with temperatures often below freezing, especially in January and February.

Winter Sports and Activities

Nature walks

Latvia is full of nature trails and places worth seeing during the winter. Weather permitting, you can explore the Latvian coastline by walking a stretch of the Latvian coastal trail, Jūrtaka. Or experience the quiet, meditative side of Latvian forests on our Mežtaka trail.

Another option is to explore one of Latvia’s nature parks or visit a bog. During Latvian winters, it’s best to choose a clear day, dress warmly, and stay mindful of cold conditions.

Skiing and snowboarding

Latvia offers plenty of opportunities for winter sports. You can visit one of the Latvian ski resorts like Žagarkalns and Ozolkalns near Cēsis, which open earliest. Other ski resorts in Riga and elsewhere in Latvia open when there is more snow for a longer time – most likely in January and February. When snow cover becomes stable, join kids and adults alike sledding down hills across the country.

Bobsleigh

Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track is an exciting place to visit all year round. In winter, it offers soft-bob rides, soft-luge, and ice-raft experiences that are hard to forget. The Gauja Valley and Sigulda offer wonderful views as backdrops as well, and there are plenty of places to explore nearby.

Skating

There are plenty of indoor ice-skating rinks, but the Latvian winter opens opportunities for communal outdoor skating as well. You can enjoy the winter public skating magic in Esplanāde in Riga. If cold weather lasts long enough, more outdoor ice rinks tend to open.

Cultural and Cozy Experiences

Museums

Winter in Latvia is also great for enjoying art and culture. Explore winter exhibitions at art museums such as the spectacular Latvian National Museum of Art, Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, Rothko Museum, and more. Or enjoy many other exciting and popular museums like Riga Motor Museum, Turaida Museum Reserve, and the dark history of the KGB building at The Corner House.

At the end of the year, you can also see seasonal exhibits by the Riga Porcelain Museum, Riga Art Nouveau Centre Museum, the Culture Palace “Ziemeļblāzma”.

Music

For those looking for a musical adventure, winter in Latvia offers many delightful options. Visit the Latvian National Opera for their unforgettable New Year Gala Concerts or other classic opera and ballet performances. You can also explore concerts by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra in venues across the country.

For a more intimate atmosphere, seek out smaller folk and chamber concerts in venues like churches, cultural centers and halls.

Cafes and restaurants

Winter in Latvia calls for some proper Latvian food and drinks too. For a five-star experience, try out one of the Latvian Michelin restaurants.

Latvia is also home to internationally recognized specialty coffee brands like Rocket Bean and Kalve Coffee, and full of other high-quality coffee shops and cafes where you can enjoy tasty local cakes, pastries, and a hot drink. Don’t forget to sample local mulled wine or Riga Black Balsam, often added to coffee or tea during winter.

Special Winter Events

Latvian sauna and cold swimming

If you’re looking for an authentic winter experience in Latvia, getting to know the Latvian sauna traditions is a must. For those searching for an extra kick, add a cold dip or roll in the snow, but be sure to pick an option suitable for your health and fitness.

Light shows and festive decorations

Winter in Latvia is quite dark, with short daylight hours. Seek light in the darkness, and you’ll find it: cities and towns across Latvia are illuminated with festive lights, perfect for cozy evening walks.

There are also plenty of light and art festivals throughout the winter like Staro Rīga in November, the Light Walking Trail at the Open-Air Museum, and the Winter Works light festival at the Botanical Garden.

Christmas markets

Throughout December and until early January, make sure to visit one of the magical Christmas markets in Latvia. Explore the internationally recognized Riga Christmas Market in Dome Square, and visit others such as Āgenskalns Market, and Jaunmarka art fair.
