This year's Big Cleanup (Lielā talka) was attended by about 190,000 people - close to a tenth of Latvia's population. This repeats the 2011 record for the number of people participating in the initiative to clean up Latvia come spring, organizers of the event told the press Monday.

Volunteers took to 1,750 spots the organizers had marked as needing a clean-up, and many donned boot and glove to remove rubbish from unofficial spots near their homes as well.

The greatest activity was reported in the vicinity of Rīga and in the Vidzeme region, with Latgale following closely.

Latvia's President Raimonds Vējonis (Greens) participated in the event, too, saying his thanks to everyone who took part.
