The European Railroad Lines, Ltd, company, which is handling the first stage of the Rail Baltica project in Latvia, has just announced an international sketch design competition, “An idea for the construction of the Rail Baltica railway bridge and complex development of the central multimodal public transport hub in Rīga.” This is part of the high-priority Rail Baltica project, which is part of the European transport network.
European Railroad Lines board member Dins Merirands: “The aim of the competition is to find the most appropriate sketch design for the central multimodal public transport hub in Rīga and the Rail Baltica railway bridge. The territory covers 14 hectares and includes the historical central railway station in Rīga, the embankment from Dzirnavu Street to Krasta Street, and the planned Rail Baltic railway bridge over the Daugava River. It is in the centre of Rīga, the capital city of Latvia, and the territory has always been one of the capital’s landmarks. Architects, urban planners, rail transport specialists and landscape architects from Latvia and abroad are invited to take part in this interdisciplinary competition, because the type of the project makes it necessary to combine skills and competences. There is also a study area that covers approximately 59 ha, and after the competition we hope to obtain master plan solutions for the development of the entire competition area.”
The competition will last for four months, and the focus will be on the urban and architectural solution for the competition object, taking into account the functionality, mobility and accessibility of the competition object and the logistics that relate to the organisation of construction. The submissions will be evaluated by an international jury.
