Latvian conductors Andris Nelsons and Mariss Jansons have received nominations for the prestigious 59th Grammy Music Awards in the category of “Best Orchestral Performance”. Jansons has been nominated for his recording of Sergei Prokofiev’s 5th Symphony with the Royal Concertgebouw orchestra, while Nelsons got the nod for his Shostakovich: Under Stalin’s Shadow, which includes the composer’s 5th, 8th and 9th symphonies and was recorded with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The latter record, which was released by Deutsche Grammophon, has also been nominated as the Best Engineered Album, Classical.
Nelsons and the Boston orchestra won the Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance last year for the first recording of the aforementioned series, featuring Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony. Jansons received a Grammy for his recording of Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony back in 2006, again in the category “Best Orchestral Performance”.
